Matariki is the Māori name for the clusters of stars that rises in midwinter and signifies the start of a new year for many Māori.  The return of the cluster is celebrated this year on Friday 28th June with Te Rā Aro ki Matariki.  Food is central to the celebration of Matariki, with different stars in the cluster associated with the various domains from where we source our food; gardens (Tupuānuku), forests (Tupuārangi), fresh water (Waitī) and the ocean (Waitā).  Māori believe that the appearance of Matariki in the morning sky in Winter would determine the success or failure of kai (food) harvesting.

To celebrate the coming of Matariki this year, we invite you to share fresh, locally-sourced kai (food) with us.  Since long ago, Māori have cooked their food beneath the ground. At Hell’s Gate we still use these same traditional cooking techniques today, but with a geothermal twist. Experience delicacies hand-picked from the land and sea, prepared by chefs and cooked using the raw geothermal energy of the Hell’s Gate Reserve harnessed into steam pots.
